We hold the governments ‘Every Child Matters’ Agenda close to our hearts and aim to make these principles a part of every day life at Newsham and promote them whenever possible. We actively encourage, support and teach our pupils to ensure that they:

Be Healthy

• Physically healthy
• Mentally and Emotionally Healthy
• Sexually Healthy
• Healthy Lifestyles
• Choose not to take illegal drugs

Examples include stringent Child Protection Policies, access to drinking water in classrooms and healthy school meals

Stay Safe

• Safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation
• Safe from accident, injury and death
• Safe from bullying and discrimination
• Safe from crime and anti-social behaviour in and out of school
• Have security, stability and are cared for

Examples include ensuring that pupils feel safe in their learning environment and are listened to sympathetically. They feel confident to ask for support.

ENJOY AND ACHIEVE

• Ready for school
• Attend and enjoy school
• Achieve stretching national education standards
• Achieve personal and social development and enjoy recreation

Examples include our use of an ‘Inclusion Mentor’ who deals with attendance and punctuality issues, a tracking system which enables us to set challenging target for all pupils and a range of enrichment activities available to pupils.

Make a Positive Contribution

• Engage in decision making and support the community and environment
• Engage in positive and law abiding behaviour
• Develop positive relationships
• Develop self confidence and deal with challenges
• Develop enterprising behaviour

Examples include our school council, our school buddy system and initiatives to raise money for school events.

ACHIEVE ECONOMIC WELL-BEING

• Encourage further education and training
• Prepare for a future in employment
• Live in decent homes and communities
• Have access to transport and material goods

Examples include talking with a range of visitors to school about their lives and encouraging further training and learning opportunities.
