Maths/Numeracy

The National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) was implemented in September 1999. Its structure is similar to that of the Literacy Hour. All KS1 and KS2 pupils receive a daily maths lesson of between 45-60mins. A variety of maths schemes are used to support the Numeracy Framework and our detailed plans provide continuity and progression throughout the school.

Maths Lesson Maths at Newsham First School is taught in a number of ways but much of the work is related to and supported by practical activities in order to develop a sound basic knowledge and understanding in numbers and their properties, calculation, measurement, shape and data handling. We aim to develop pupils’ confidence and enthusiasm and their ability to apply mathematical skills and knowledge to the world around them. Setting is used in Key Stage 2 to enable us to teach pupils within ability groups. Teachers make regular use of a wide range of ICT to support teaching and learning in numeracy lessons throughout the school.
